What is Pelvic Floor Therapy?

Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation is treatment by a physical therapist who has received specialized
training to treat the weakness, tightness, and spasms that may accompany pelvic floor dysfunction.
These treatments address functional goals such as improved continence, decreased pain with daily
activities including, sitting, walking, and prolonged standing, and sexual function.

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is highly beneficial for prenatal and postpartum care. It strengthens and
supports the pelvic floor muscles during pregnancy and helps with postpartum recovery. It addresses
various issues such as baby positioning, pubic pain, diastasis recti, perineal tear or episiotomy
recovery, C-section recovery, pelvic pain, and urinary incontinence commonly experienced by
women after childbirth
What treatments do you use for pelvic floor physiotherapy?

We may use a combination of the following • Manual Therapy • Pelvic floor Exercises • Transverse
abdominus stabilization and core strengthening • Postural education and functional training •
Electrical stimulation • Bladder diary • Behavioral techniques • Relaxation techniques and
stretching. Each treatment session can last 30-60 mins.
What happens at your first visit?

The initial assessment takes 60 minutes. We do a comprehensive evaluation of the condition, and
medical history, and establish goals. Each
Your physical therapist will perform an assessment of your posture, hips, abdomen, and pelvic floor
muscles looking at strength, mobility, and movement patterns that may be contributing to your
symptoms. The evaluation may include an external and internal exam of your pelvic floor muscles.
You will have the option to choose or refuse any part of the examination or treatment with which
you don't feel comfortable.
How long will it take to see change?

Some may experience improvements within 3-4 sessions while some may take 8-12 sessions.
Consistency with home exercises and following your home program can accelerate progress
